Open Source vs. Proprietary Software, Part 1

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

The Intranet Journal has a conside article comparing open source and proprietary intranet software.  T It is set to be a three part series, and atleast this first part is general enough to be applicable to most OSS vs. non-free choices.

The article covers the pros and cons in terms of:

  • Freedom from “The Man”
  • Cost of ownership
  • Experienced support communities
  • Software customization
  • Product longevity

So if you need to convince someone to go with OSS instead of proprietary, take a look.

Sub-notebook availability in Finland

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Not so long ago it was next to impossible to find a sub-notebook of any kind in Finnish stores, now it seems that several shops are offering atleast one of the major models (ASUS Eee PC, MSI Wind, Acer Aspire One). Below are some of the best deals I could find, please let me know if you come across any better ones.

Splashtop/ExpressGate Update & Gallery

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

As I promised earlier, here’s an update on the hacking of Splashtop.  I got it to run within QEMU and from a USB stick on my desktop.  It wasn’t all that difficult once I managed to find the IMG file from the ASUS support web site.

ZDNet: Android and Symbian won’t merge

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Dana Blankenhorn comments on the recent rumours of Google’s Android and Nokia’s Symbian joining forces.

He’s betting heavily against that eventuality, and with good reason. To me, at least it seems unlikely that the two will find their way together. I’m not even sure whether it would be reasonably possible to combine both code bases, they are rather different platforms, after all.

And on a personal note to Mr. Blankenhorn, if Google were to give up Android, it could “push” the code to the Finns, not the Swedes.

SplashTop “Instant-On Linux” Gets Hacked

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Some cunning members of the Phoronix Forums have managed to get Splashtop to run off a USB stick on non-ASUS motherboards, boot Splashtop within a virtual machine, run customs applications and open terminal.

Considering that ASUS is going to put Splash top on all of it’s future motherboards and on some of it’s notebooks, it seems that this is going to get interesting.

If I can get Splashtop running in VirtualBox, I’ll be sure to post the results here.

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Today’s xkcd cartoon is particularly relevant to us in the Linux crowd, if only because for most of us it’s already too late.

Best README in all time?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

fsckin w/ linux may well have found the best README file ever written.  It comes straight from the gnome-cups-manager.  Read on below.

When you’re done reading that, you might also like to check out the 189 funny Unix Error Messages post.

Once upon a time there was a printer who lived in the woods. He was a
lonely printer, because nobody knew how to configure him. He hoped
and hoped for someone to play with.
One day, the wind passed by the printer's cottage. "Whoosh," said the
wind. The printer became excited. Maybe the wind would be his
friend!

Both this blog and the main site are now back online after a day of server trouble.  The problem should not repeat as we are now aware of the incompatibility that caused the problem.

‘Nerdcore For Life’ Documentary

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Though it has existed on-line for almost a decade, only recently has Nerdcore gone from being an internet fad to an underground cultural phenomenon.  Filmed over the course of  two years, Nerdcore For Life profiles the top names in the genre as they celebrate “geek Life” and their passion for hip hop to the fullest, fight anti-nerd stereotypes, and attempt to overcome the common obstacles that block musicians of all types from fulfilling their dreams.  The documentary follows these dedicated artists as they go from recording rhymes in their mother’s basement to performing live for thousands of cheering fans.  From their first song to their first MTV appearance, Nerdcore For Life chronicles the amazing transformation of a group of unknown nerds into internet celebrities and rising hip-hop stars.

Wired has an expansive article about this documentary and about Nerdcore itself.

I myself have in earlier years designed a few album covers for a few Rhyme Torrents collections.  (See CD Covers on my main site, Draco Vulgaris)

New Draco Vulgaris up and running

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

As some of you might have noticed, my web site, Draco-Vulgaris.Net has undergone a transformation. It’s now more in line with the way this blog looks and I moved it to a different CMS, Drupal.

My good friend Joãos was kind enough to provide me with space on his VPS for both this blog and the main site.

So check it out at the same old address:
