Creative Commons Music

As some of you might have noticed, I license every post and page on this site under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license. From this you might deduct that I’m a fan of free content (Free as in freedom, that is; not free as in free beer), and so I am.

Today I’ve been taking a look at sources for free music and thus here’s a quick round up for you.

1. Jamendo

All the music on Jamendo is licensed under a Creative Commons License.  User can download whole albums either using HTTP or bittorrent in either MP3 or OGG format.  You can also donate money to artists you favour.  It is also possible to embed a flash player on any website.  I already found a few artists that I enjoy, so it looks pretty promising.

2. ccMixer

ccMixer is a Creative Commons remix site with podcasts, streaming music and downloads.  There are CC’d samples and a capellas available for download for remixers.

3. LegalTorrents

LegalTorrents distributes high-quality Creative Commons digital media.  Finding music you like here might be harder though, unless you know what you’re looking for.

4. Musopen

For your classical music fix you can head over to Musopen which offers a library of public domain recordings.  At the moment recordings range from Chopin to Mozart, from Schubert to Debussy.  And these aren’t recording from 1924 with expired copryrights; these are brand new, recorded specially for this project.  Sheet music and a “Public Domain Music Textbook” are also available.
