Creative Commons Music

As some of you might have noticed, I license every post and page on this site under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license. From this you might deduct that I’m a fan of free content (Free as in freedom, that is; not free as in free beer), and so I am.

Today I’ve been taking a look at sources for free music and thus here’s a quick round up for you.

NASA opens up space image library

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Nasa is to make its huge collection of historic photographs, film and video available to the public for the first time.

A partnership with the non-profit Internet Archive will see 21 major Nasa imagery collections merged into a single searchable online resource.

What’s best is that due to NASA being a US government institution, most of the images are in the public domain, just as the Terms & Conditions page states:

The NASA imagery offered on NASAIMAGES.ORG is generally not copyrighted. You may use this NASA imagery for educational or informational purposes, including photo collections, textbooks, public exhibits and Internet Web pages (personal or otherwise).

Big Buck Bunny

Though I missed it at the time, at the end of last week the open source movie Big Buck Bunny (originally codenamed ‘Peach’) was released for download.  Big Buck Bunny is a completely free (free as in ‘free beer’ and free as in ‘free speech’) animation that clock in at slightly under 10 minutes.

A variety of formats are available on the Big Buck Bunny download page, including MP4, H.264, MSMP4.  The resolutions available are 1080p, 720p and 480p.  You can also watch it online on Vimeo or YouTube.

Not only is the actual finished film available, but also all the source and raw files.  Big Buck Bunny is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.  It follows the ‘Elephants Dream‘ open movie (originally codenamed ‘Orange’).

A game based on the movie is in progress (codenamed ‘Apricot‘).
