Hacking Abilities vs Language Skills
Today I was reading and Ars Technica article on the Australian classification board getting its web site hacked when it occurred to me that hacking abilities and language skills must be inversely proportional. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a vandalized web site that had a legible message on it?
I imagine that the relationship is something like the graph above (nevermind its rough looks, I just quickly drew it up in Inkscape).
Let x = hacking ability
Let y = language skills
Thus y=k/x, where k is an unknown constant.

A piece of popular wisdom (if there ever was such a thing) is held to be that the old jokes are the best. Now a classic scholar has seemingly proved the point with the discovery of an ancient Greek version of the world famous “Dead Parrot sketch” featured on the classic Monty Python show.
A comedy duo called Hierocles and Philagrius told the original version, only rather than a parrot they used a slave.
It concerns a man who complains to his friend that he was sold a slave who dies in his service.
His companion replies: “When he was with me, he never did any such thing!”

Here’s some of the thing I didn’t have time to write about this week (sorry about that, I blame a combination of lots of things to do and laziness).

Apparently the Blue Screen of Death has been harassing NIN on tour. Well, sort of; according the Gizmodo’s Sean Fallow, Trent Reznor is a Mac fan so he’s slipped a jab at windows in the concert visuals.
I have to admit that the above picture must be the coolest screenshot of a BSOD, ever.

TechGadgets.in is reporting that the price for the Acer Aspire One sub-notebook is being cut to $329 USD (for the Linux version) in the states. This is the price before sales tax or VAT. at the moment the Aspire One seems to be retailing for about €299 here in Finland and if one adds VAT to the new price of the Aspire One it comes to about €272, so not a large cut in the end, but it still places the Aspire One at a very attractive price point (IF we see a similar price cut here in Europe).
And here’s my math, if anyone’s interested:
329 USD = 222.86 EUR [1 USD = 0.677 EUR]
222.86 * 1.22 = 271.54 EUR [22% is the VAT here in Finland]

This may or may not be real, but if it is real, it’s pretty damn funny. Supposedly a Windows machine used for projections during the Olympics Opening Ceremony crashed during the show, resulting in the hilarious picture above.
Perhaps it would have been worth it to use a more stable OS (*cough*, Linux)?
WARNING: This may very well turn out to be a fake, or then not.

ASUS have lauched Eee Storage, which gives you 20GB of space online for your files, pictures and documents. Apparently Eee Storage provides the user with “a drag and drop interface to transfer files between the Eee PC and web storage location.” No word yet on what this interface looks like, or how it’s been implemented.
Another new Eee feature/product is Eee Download which currently has “around 3,000 free software and game titles available for Eee PC users to download.” ASUS plans to expand the service with music and “other content.” The Eee Download service is only available to Chinese language users at the moment.

Some cunning members of the Phoronix Forums have managed to get Splashtop to run off a USB stick on non-ASUS motherboards, boot Splashtop within a virtual machine, run customs applications and open terminal.
Considering that ASUS is going to put Splash top on all of it’s future motherboards and on some of it’s notebooks, it seems that this is going to get interesting.
If I can get Splashtop running in VirtualBox, I’ll be sure to post the results here.
