UK Release Date for New Asus Eee PCs

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Asus Eee PC 901 black

ITWeek (and several other sources) reports that the new Asus Eee PCs will be available in the UK on July 1st.  This includes the Eee PC 901, 1000 and 1000H.

No pricing deatils have merged for the UK yet, but in Taiwan the 901 costs NT$16,988 (£287); the 1000 NT$19,988 (£338) and the 1000H NT$18,988 (£321).  I would expect a somewhat higher price tag in the UK, mostly due to taxes and the fact that most electronics cost more in Europe anyway.

The new models come with 20GB free online storage from Yo Store with file encryption and both Windows and Linux access.

Asus Eee PC 900

A review by Stuff.co.nz gives the Linux Asus Eee PC 900 4.5 stars. The review itself has little detail to it, and certainly nothing new, but it is nice to see more Linux based devices getting media attention…

iMac Rival Added to Eee PC Range?

Asus Eee Monitor sketch

According to PC World Asus intends to launch a rival to Apple’s iMac sometime in September.  The new device, called the Eee Monitor, will join the existing Eee Range and will be available with Linux or Windows XP.  Don’t expect the Eee Monitor to have the glamour of Apple’s products as most likely it will continue the ‘cheap and functional’ design that the current Eee devices have.

£10 Battery Upgrade for Eee PC 900 buyers in the UK

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Asus Eee PC 900As reported earlier, any Asus Eee PC 900 bought in the UK (and probably anywhere in Europe) will have a lower capacity battery than in the US.

Now it seems that Asus is backing down and offering UK buyers an option to upgrade to a higher capacity battery by sending their original 4400mAh battery to an Asus service centre in exchange for a 5800mAh battery.  Mind you this will cost you £10 + VAT (but inc P&P).

Presumably the rest of Europe will get a similar offer…
