According to a post on Gizmodo Dell’s answer to the likes of the ASUS Eee PC and the MSI Wind, the Inspiron 910 is to be released this Friday, September 5th 2008. No word on what the source of this information is nor on whether the pencil will be included in the package nor on in which markets the Inspiron 910 will be available.
According to a post on Engadget the new MSI Wind U90 netbook will be available here in Europe (no info abut specific markets) for €339 with SUSE Linux. Shipping should start by the end of September.

Unfortunately no word on whether this will be available with Linux as well, the MSI site on mentions Windows XP (which is a damn stupid OS to run on such low-spec machines).
Looks like ASUS is launching a “premium” 10.2-inch netbook, the ASUS N10. This one comes without the Eee branding and is obviously meant for the image conscious. Digitimes is reporting the price at €330 to €430, but really there are few hard facts available yet. Blogeee.net has more pictures.

Lenovo has announced it’s entry into the Netbook, or sub-notebook market. The Linux-based IdeaPad S9 and Windows-XP-based S10 will feature 8.9- and 10-inch displays, respectively. Both are powered by the 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and feature webcams and up to 160GB of storage.
The Linux version features the same distribution as the Acer Aspire One, Linpus.
According to Lenovo, the IdeaPad S10 will be available in early October. U.S pricing is $400 for a 512MB/80GB configuration, and $500 for a 1GB/160GB configuration. Availability and pricing of the Linux-based S9, which will be targeted at overseas markets, was not available.
It seems that it is still unclear which markets will get access to the IdeaPad S9.

Mandriva is aiming for its share of the sub-notebook/netbook market with the new Gdium laptop. What makes this particular laptop somewhat different from most of the pack is that it features no internal storage at all, “the operating system and all user data are stored on a USB key, known as the G-Key, which plugs into a USB port under the keyboard, in the middle of the machine.” According to the folks at Mandriva this unique feature makes the Gdium “ideal for any environment where several systems will be shared among many users – like many office and education environments.”
Canonical has unveiled it’s version of Ubuntu for UMPCs and sub-notebooks. It is a “reworked desktop image of Ubuntu built specifically for a new category of portable internet-centric devices.” It is meant to “get [users] online more quickly and [give them] faster access to their favorite applications.” It “leverages Moblin technologies optimized for the Intel Atom processor.”
Ubuntu Netbook Remix is set to make its first appearance on devices later this year.

The Guardian has an interesting interview with Mark Shuttleworth, the head of Canonical. In the interview he discusses, among other things, Linux’s role on the Desktop; Canonical’s business model; and Netbook Remix, a version of Ubuntu for ultraportable laptops (due in the first week of June).
