Dell E

About two weeks ago we got a small sneak preview of Dell’s own sub-notebook.  At that time we got almost no details except for what could be seen in a few photographs but now Dell has more for us.

Known as Dell E and Dell E Slim they are going to have 8.9″ and 12.1″ screens, respectively.

There will be five different configurations available (three for the E plus two for the E Slim).  More details on the configurations and a gallery after the break.

Development of the Sub-Notebook Market

Asus Eee PC Colours

InternetNews has some analysis on the direction that the sub-notebook market is moving in.  The author, Mike Elgan, contends that as prices drop, sub-notebooks will come bundled with many services (e.g. broadband or 3G).

My prediction is that by the middle of next year, “mini me too” laptops will be given away in the United States, and by so many companies that they’ll become hard to sell at any price.

Smaller, Thinner MSI Wind Aimed At Business

Shrink MSI Wind

Having just pushed the original Wind sub-notebook out the door, MSI is already planning a new version, aimed at business users.  It is set to use the same CPU and chipset as the original but will be thinner.  In essence the business Wind will largely use the same components as the original.

“On Intel’s roadmap, there won’t be any change in Atom until the second half of next year, so the microprocessor and chipset will be the same,” said Tung.

The new Wind will probably be available in the first quarter of 2009, and may be seen at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

MSI is also said to be working on a device even smaller than the current class of sub-notebooks for people who want to surf the internet while on the move.  Perhaps something in the line of the Nokia Internet Tablet?

Sony to Produce VIA’s OpenBook?

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

VIA OpenBook

Sony appears to be ready to ship a notebook based on the VIA OpenBook reference design.  A prototype by Quanta Computer was apparently spotted at the WiMax Expo.

A check of the laptop’s properties confirmed the laptop is based on a 1.6GHz C7-M processor from Via and listed Sony as the manufacturer. When the existence of Sony’s name on the machine was pointed out to a Quanta executive manning the booth, he quickly closed the properties window and declined to explain why Sony was listed as the manufacturer.

The VIA OpenBook is a reference design for a sub-notebook that was released under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license.  For more information on the design, go to viaopenbook.com

£99 Linux Laptop From Elonex

Elonex One swirl

A UK company by the name of Elonex is taking pre-orders for a £99 (+ £10 p&p) laptop, the Elonex One.  It runs a version of Linux called Linos (kernel version 2.6.21).  The laptop won’t dazzle you on performance, but what do you expect for £99?  The machine should still be good for email, surfing music etc… Plus, you can detach the keyboard and use it as a tablet PC.  Shipping is set to start in June.

An upgraded model (the Elonex One+) with more memory and bluetooth is available for an additional £20.

See the full specifications and more pictures after the break.

mini-inspiron-2

Apparently Dell is set to unveil some sort of sub-notebook soon.  No details other than the two pictures included in this post have been revealed yet.  All that we know, or think we know, is that it will land in the sub-$500 price range, have a 8.9″ screen, choice of both Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Linux, 8-in-1 card reader, integrated webcam, direct media playback buttons, and a “host of wireless access options.”

Gizmodo has more pics, if you’re interested.
